Salam Alaykom

I have always wondered about religions in U.S.A. I knew that in America there were a large number of Muslims, but I did not know that they suffered a lot to form a society and to gain American people’s respect.

Last February 28th the students from the International Friendship Club and of course me enjoyed a video about Muslims living in America. The video caught my mind; I was shocked, while others knew what the video was about because they have had suffered the same in their own lives. Discrimination, fear, and union, that what Muslims had been suffering since they came to the land of freedom, and unfortunately, that situation got worse since 9/11.

Arabs in general, Muslims in particular, suffered a lot from the moment they came to the U.S. They fought like others for their rights, but they obeyed the country and the government that offered land and money so they could maintain a good life. “The worse part was at airports”, said my friend, they checked her twice because she was Muslim, while others were not!!! Why?? “It’s a routine, it’s security, it’s protection….” I understood that, but it became humiliating sometimes! Do you want someone to search your underwear piece by piece to see if there were something there??? Well come on thats exaggeration!! By the way that’s my opinion!!!

The documentary was also, showing Muslim girls who were committed to their religion, they were able to adapt with the American society, although they were religious. Some girls of course denied their religion and ignored the values that Islam gave them. They took off the Hegab(a scarf that female Muslims put to cover their head) , stopped praying, and were “Americanized”.

Every religion has its own ceremonies, rules, and concepts that all of us  should respect and honor. Islam is not a religion that supports terrorism or corruption, it is a religion like any other one, that calls for peace.

SALAM ALAYKOM (peace be on you, Muslims salutation)

To learn another language is challenge ( a huge one ), well it was for me when I was learning English, and it still being a challenge to me. Well, what I want to say is that it is difficult, but once that you make it true it feels a very exiting satisfaction. Here at school almost everybody speaks English now, enough reason to have fun trying to learn another language, there is ma huge diversity of language at school but my beautiful Spanish makes a union on all of them. Americans like or they took Spanish class, Japanese think it sounds beautiful and romantic, Sudanese like because many of them work with Latin people and they teach them, Arabs watch Spanish sop operas all the time so they do in Macedonia and Bosnia and the lovely people from Mongolia I don’t know why but they love it is. This is why Spanish became to be very popular at IWCC.

First of all, there is a Pretty-Latino community at School, all of us speak Spanish hahaha and you know this Latin people is spicy hehehe. Creating doubt in people who don’t speak Spanish and like the way it sound, people started to show some interest for Spanish. Also, there is a Spanish class (which is 4 credits). Well, people like it, and when they look at us speaking it, they ask us how to say many things, and it pretty fun for them and for us.

Personally, I LOVE to teach them, and help them with their Spanish homework, it feels so FANTASTICO, and we have a tons of fun, specially when they say it wrong or they can not pronounce. They feel the same way I felt when I was learning English and when I learn stuff in another languages like French, Arabic, Japanese, Macedonian and Russian. Yeap!!! Not only Spanish is popular at school, there so many more languages to mess with!!

Actually, I thing even there are so many languages spoken at school, Spanish is the most popular hehehehe and I’m not saying this because I speak it, is because I really thing so. As I said, it may be because of the Spanish class (4 credits don’t forget), or maybe because people listen to us , the relevant thing is that almost everybody like it and I don’t say everybody because of those who failed Spanish class and now the hate it. Spanish is beautiful and it does not matter they way people speak it, we (native speakers) can understand. Words like, taco, nachos, chile, caliente, andale, the traditional hola como estas and adios are part of friends of mine who don’t speak it, and it is very very SPICY SPICY AY AY AY!!
