Salam Alaykom
Friday, February 29th, 2008I have always wondered about religions in U.S.A. I knew that in America there were a large number of Muslims, but I did not know that they suffered a lot to form a society and to gain American people’s respect.
Last February 28th the students from the International Friendship Club and of course me enjoyed a video about Muslims living in America. The video caught my mind; I was shocked, while others knew what the video was about because they have had suffered the same in their own lives. Discrimination, fear, and union, that what Muslims had been suffering since they came to the land of freedom, and unfortunately, that situation got worse since 9/11.
Arabs in general, Muslims in particular, suffered a lot from the moment they came to the U.S. They fought like others for their rights, but they obeyed the country and the government that offered land and money so they could maintain a good life. “The worse part was at airports”, said my friend, they checked her twice because she was Muslim, while others were not!!! Why?? “It’s a routine, it’s security, it’s protection….” I understood that, but it became humiliating sometimes! Do you want someone to search your underwear piece by piece to see if there were something there??? Well come on thats exaggeration!! By the way that’s my opinion!!!
The documentary was also, showing Muslim girls who were committed to their religion, they were able to adapt with the American society, although they were religious. Some girls of course denied their religion and ignored the values that Islam gave them. They took off the Hegab(a scarf that female Muslims put to cover their head) , stopped praying, and were “Americanized”.
Every religion has its own ceremonies, rules, and concepts that all of us should respect and honor. Islam is not a religion that supports terrorism or corruption, it is a religion like any other one, that calls for peace.
SALAM ALAYKOM (peace be on you, Muslims salutation)
